Description

Iglesia de Santiago (Villafranca de El Bierzo, León)

Siglo XII.Construcción con sillares, de nave única con techumbre de madera. Abside semicircular.La puerta oeste es la menos vistosa,arco de medio punto con tres arquivoltas.La portada norte se denomina también Puerta del Perdón; los peregrinos enfermos que no podían alcanzar al final del camino de Santiago, obtenían las indulgencias postrándose ante esta puerta. Consta de cuatro arquivoltas, en la última de las cuales se encuentran las figuras de los doce apóstoles rodeando un Cristo sedente. Los capiteles del lado derecho están labrados con motivos vegetales y zoomórficos; en el lado izquierdo se representan: la visita de los Reyes Magos a Herodes, el pueblo de Belén, la crucifixión, los Magos a caballo, el ángel apareciéndose a los magos en sueños y la Epifanía. En la parte alta destaca una cabeza humana.
