After this rolling which is done quickly, tlie surfaceof the asphalt is covered with finely ground dry mineraldust (generally using dry liydraullc cement), wliich isswept over the surface to give it tlie soft gray colorwhich is desired and to j^revent the adhesion of thefive-ton finishing roller with which the wearing sur-face is rolled until compressed to one and one halfinches or two inches in thickness and until the surfaceis perfect. Cities are about equally divided as to whichof these thicknesses is used, as indicated in table onpage 56. This rolling will usually occupy about one hour onsixty feet length of pavement thirty feet wide. The entire manipulation of the material, and espe-cially its spreading and rolling, require skill and carenot only for the general features here described butalso for many other important details which are neces-sary to secure good results.
