Text Appearing Before Image: the stake.In a secular capacity PresidentHeaton has acted as postmaster, jus-tice of the peace and state livestockinspector. He is a successful farmerand stock raiser and has from his earlyyouth exhibited spiritual and civilleadership. Both in Canada and theUnited States he has taken an activepart in the Boy Scout movement. HERRICK, John Lester, presidentof the Wetsern States Mission, from1908 to 1919, was born in Ogden, Utah,June 2, 1868, a son of Lester JamesHerrick, and Agnes McQuarrie. Hisboyhood and young manhood werespent in the Second Ward of Ogden,where he served in the presidency ofthe Deacons and Teachers Quorums,and had charge of the Priests underthe direction of Bishop Robert Mc-Quarrie. He also acted as secretaryand later as president of the YoungMens Mutual Improvement Associa-tion of the Ogden Second Ward, pre-sided over the ward choir and served Vol. IV. No. 10 March 7, 193(> liC, I.ATTER-DAY SAINT as business manager of the SecondWard Dramatic Club for many years.

Text Appearing After Image: He was ordained an Elder in May,1894, by John Scowcroft, and a HighPriest in 1899 by Apostle Franklin D.Richards. In 1889 he was chosen secre-tary of the Stake Board of the YoungMens Mutual Improvement Associa-tion and became superintendent of saidboard in 1899, serving in that capacityuntil the division of Weber Stake in1908. Prior to that he was a memberof the High Council for five years. In the fall of 1908 he was calledto preside over the Western StatesMission with headquarters at Denver,Colorado, and assumed the duties ofthat position, Jan. 1, 1909. During hisadministration he built the presentchapel and mission home at Denver.After being released in July, 1919, heacted as pi-esident of the DenverBranch in 1928-1934. In 1894 (June 1) he married JaneRichards West in the Salt Lake Tem-ple, Apostle Franklin D. Richards per-forming the ceremony. This union hasbeen blessed with three children,namely, Josephine, John West, andLester James. Brother Herrick started work as an office boy
