At one place wedescended as low as 13,000 feet and came once more amongstdense forests of juniper, silver firs {Abies Wehhiana), mountainash, willow, birch and tall rhododendrons. Erom everytree hung long grey hchens attesting the moisture of thecHmate. Wherever there was an open space ua the forest,it was carpeted with flowers. Two delightful varietiesof primula were new to me, and were just commg out, oneof them being almost black ui colour. The big deep redmeconopsis grew here, too, in great luxuriance. Gentiansof all kinds abounded and many other varieties of flowersand ferns, due to the fact that Makalu seems to attractaU the storms, causmg the moist Monsoon cm^rents to bedrawn into this valley. As the day went on, the weatherimproved; the sun came out, and the clouds melted away, disclosing the magnificent peaks of Makalu. A big glacierdescended from the East face from a side valley into the Text Appearing After Image: The Kama Valley. THE KAMA VALLEY 119 floor of the valley below us at a height of about 12,000 feet.It was very curious to see fir trees, birch and juniper, anda very luxuriant vegetation growing on either side of theice and on the moraines beside it. Below this glacier the vaUey became quite flat withgrassy meadows and patches of forest dotted about thepastures—a very unusual type of valley for the Himalayas.Almost opposite to this glacier we turned into a side vaUey;the path and the stream that came down this valley wereoften indistmguishable. All round the vaUey were greatblack cliffs; in one place where they were less precipitousthe path found its way upwards. Our camp was pitchedthat night on a shelf above the cHffs where for a short timewe had some very wonderful views. This place was calledin Tibetan The Field of Marigolds, though at the timewe were there they were aU over. We were at a height of15,300 feet, and Makalus two peaks were almost exactlyopposite to us.
