He actedas chairman of the committee on char-acter education of the National Coun-cil of Education and of the NationalEducation Association from 1920 to1926, has been a member of the Na-tional Council of Education since 1915and is a fellow in the American Asso-ciation for the advancement of science. On June 22, 1898, Elder Bennionmarried Cora Lindsay in the Salt LakeTemple. To them have been born thefollowing sons and daughters: Claire(Mrs. Wm. L. Jones), Maurine (Mrs.E. L. Folsom), Milton Lindsay (M.Lynn), Wayne L., Lowell L., Ruth,Grant Madson, Frances, Margaret and Vaughan L. Ruth and Margaret diedin infancy. All the others, exceptVaughn, are now adults and graduatesof the University of Utah. There being-no house in the town, he was born ina covered wagon, the box of which hadbeen lifted from the running gearsand set upon supports, which raisedthe bed a few inches above the ground.The family was recalled from theDixie Mission and returned to SaltLake City in the spring of 1869. George M. was baptized by GeorgeQ. Cannon on his eighth birthday,Dec. 25, 1869, became a member ofthe 14th Ward, and there received suc-cessively ordination to the office ofDeacon, Teacher, Priest, and Elder,the latter oidination was under thehands of the presidency of the Istquorum of Elders, Edward W. Davis,John W. Taylor and Matthias F. Cow-ley. Later George M. Cannon becamepresident of the First Quorum of El-ders, and as such had charge of the BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA 207 furnishing of the Elders room in theSalt Lake Temple at the time of itsdedication in 1893.
