The mere-ly well-to-do and poor-er classes wear clotheswoven of cotton, silk,and piiia, or of pinaand hemp, or of hempor bamboo. But theglory of the wealthy,Spaniard or Meztizo,man or w^oman, aretheir garments of purepineapple-leaf fibre,called jusi. This isdurable and almostpriceless. A small jusihandkerchief is worth$50. So delicate isthe thread, that, inweaving, it is protect-ed by gauze from thegentlest breeze. Thecostliness of the ma-terial, therefore, is dueto the difificulties ofthe weaver and to thetime and patiencenecessary to produceev^en a single inch. Herbs and medicinal plants abound in the islands. The barkof the ditd tree greatly resembles that known as Peruvian Bark,and is used by the natives to reduce fever. From it an alkaloid isextracted that is called by Manila chemists, ditaine. Its effectsare like those produced by swallowing quinine, only not somarked. A perfume called Ylang-Ylang, is made from the flowers of atree of that name that grows in the Philippines. Large quantities of wax are found there, and are used in thefunctions of the Church. Indeed, the poor priests constantlygather candle-ends at the close of each service, and sell them tobe remoulded.
