Text Appearing Before Image: ion from 1858 to 1860,was born July 5, 1809, in Essex Coun-ty, New York, a son of John andLucy Calkin. He was baptized inMarch, 1848, ordained a High PriestOct. 6, 1849, and filled a mission toEngland in 1855-1860. On his arrivalin Liverpool, Dec. 9, 1855, he was as-signed to the business department ofthe Mission Office; he also acted asfirst counselor to Pres, Samuel W.Richards. On March 6, 1858, whenthe other Elders from Zion werecalled home, he was appointed pres-ident of the British Mission, and as-sumed also the editorship of the Mil-lennial Star, which position he helduntil April 7, 1860, when he was suc-ceeded by Nathaniel V. Jones. Hesailed May 11, 1860, for America onthe ship William Tapscott. Elder BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA 313 Calkin died in St. George, Utah, Feb.15, 1873. CANNON, George Q., president ofthe British Mission from 1862 to 1864.(See Bio. EIncy., Vol. 1, p. 42.) CLAWSON, Rudger, president of the British Mission from 1910 to 1913. (See Bio.
