Text Appearing Before Image: reet-work, and which employ thebest skill to plan and to execute it, shows that block-stone pavement of all kinds have long been regardedas necessary evils which have only been toleratedbecause they were improvements on the barbarous cob-ble-stone pavements which formed the first stepping-stones out of the mud, and because better substituteswere lacking. There have been obvious advantagesw^hich have off-set the evident disadvantages, thusinducing a more general use of block-stone than is nownecessary. Block-stone pavements are now only desirable forsteep grades, or for those streets of the largest citieswhere the heaviest traffic exists. There is no suchtraffic in any city of moderate size. It has been considered until recent years that blocksof the hardest trap rock, or basalt, or granite were bestadapted to endure the class of traffic which requiredblock-stone, and vast sums have been spent in ]:)rcpar-ing and laying blocks of granite from Massachusetts, 57 CITY ROADS AND PAVEMENTS.
