Maine and Vermont, and of diabase trap rock from tliePalisades of the Hudson. Pavinof blocks formed of these rocks and laid in theusual manner with sand joints, wear in such a way thattheir tops become rounded and polished, giving a poorfoothold for horses, and forming a surface which collectsand retains filth, and causes noise, and is injurious topublic health and comfort: the hardest and finest-grained rocks giving the worst results, so that thecoarser grades of granite have nearly displaced traprock for paving blocks. i^^!±£d
