| Description |
Rural school children in the Vellore area walking home for lunch. I love the broken statue in the centre. Many rural people still live in traditional mud and thatch huts, which in the dry summertime are excellently cool without air conditioning. Cooking is done outside. These are not so idyllic though during monsoon season when it is hard to keep dry. But despite the seeming very basic conditions of life, rural life in Tamil Nadu is rich and vibrant and these children bright-eyed, playful and ambitious. I like the juxtaposition of how resilient and adaptable these communities are with their ambition for something easier (not necessarily urban-style life). |
