Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1880-1888, this Renaissance Revival-style building was designed by Edwin May and Adolf Scherer to serve as the State Capitol Building, or Statehouse, of Indiana. The building replaced an earlier and much smaller structure on the same site, which stood from 1835 until 1877, when it was condemned due to structural problems. The current building is clad in Indiana Limestone, and features a rather slender drum and dome that stands 256 feet (78 meters) tall, with a wide central wing flanked by mall end wings with mansard and gabled roofs, and skylights on the roof of the central wing, flanking the building’s dome. The building’s exterior features corinthian pilasters, a cornice with modillions, acroterions at the corners of the roof, a rusticated base, one-over-one double-hung windows, arched stained glass transoms, oxeye windows below the mansard roof and pediments, decorative trim surrounds at the windows, a two-story front portico at the second and third floors of the central bays of the east facade with fluted corinthian columns, a drum with engaged corinthian columns, arched windows, a cornice, a metal-clad dome, and reliefs of festoons, with a lantern featuring a colonnade of Corinthian columns and a smaller dome below a finial at the top, which is the base of a flagpole. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, and was rehabilitated between 1988 and 1995, restoring the building’s exterior and interior, and modernizing the building’s various systems. The building remains in use as the home of the Indiana House of Representatives, Senate, and State Supreme Court.
