Summary[edit]
DescriptionInscribed Column, Ancient Edessa (6974706600).jpg |
The inscribed column in the east gallery, two other inscriptions found at the south gate that have been removed for safekeeping and part of another inscribed column at the Agia Triacia Monastery are just someof the architectural members of the Temple of the goddess Ma, which alter the destructionof the monument in most probably AD 268 by Gothic raiders, were reused in the city's Early Christian buildings. The goddess Ma is identified with or was venerated together iwht Great Mother. Her cult with prehistoric roots, flourished particularly in the Roman age when Easter cults spread throughout the Empire and among them the cult of homonymous goddess of Cappadocia. The seventeen inscriptions on the column and those on the other architectural members date from AD 211 to 267. One of the inscriptions mentions the construction of outbuildings and a gallery, another the donation of a vineyard of two plethra (a plethron= 874 m2). Most of them, however record the manumission of slaves who were dedicated to the invincible goddess Ma. In addition to giving important information about the legal system and the calendar in use at the time, these inscriptions also record the names of priestesses and curators of the Temple and of inhabitants of the city and their occupations. |
