Summary[edit]

Description The missions built in the Southwest U.S. by the Spanish in the 18th and 19th centuries were also fortified. The fortifications would enclose large areas in which a fairly large number of people lived. They were, in fact, small towns, populated mostly by Native Americans and a few clergymen, with a few soldiers sprinkled in. The mission walls frequently would have circular bastions at their corners, where the soldiers could fire their muskets through holes in the wall at anyone trying to climb over the walls. Placing the bastions at the corners gave the soldiers fields of fire along two walls at once. This bastion is at Mission San Juan in San Antonio.
