English: Another view of the Chaphekar Wada. The Chaphekar story was briefly as under: The Chapekar brothers belonged to Poona, in Maharashtra, and under the influence of Tilak engaged themselves in revolu­tionary activities. They organised a society, known as the 'Society for the Removal of Obstacles to the Hindu Religion', for imparting military training to Indian youth for overthrow­ing the British. On June 22, 1897, the three brothers set out to kill British officer Walter Charles Rand who had handled the plague in Pune in a high-handed manner.A meticulous plan had been drawn up, but because of a slight misunderstanding in the code word, another police officer Lt Charles Ayrest was shot by Balkrishna Chapeker. However, the folly was quickly realised and Damodar Chapekar shot Rand on Ganeshkhind road. Eventually, Damodar, his brothers and their friend Mahadev Ranade were caught and hanged, The third Chapekar brother, Vasudeva, killed Ganesh Shankar Dravid, the man who helped in getting Damodar and Balkrishna arrested.
