Summary

[edit]
Description It is believed that there has been a castle on this site since the reign of Malcolm III (1057). A stone tower house was built in 1508 by Alexander Stewart Gordon, Earl of Huntly. After the Jacobite rebellion in 1715 the medieval castle was repaired and an outer wall added but this was destroyed in the 1745 rebellion. The present castle was built in 1834 by William Burn as the County Court House. The North block (originally a jail) was added in 1846-8 by Thomas Brown Junior.
