Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Irving and Mercy Kester House, 274 North Street, Buffalo, New York, June 2021. This excellent example of residential architecture of the Queen Anne style is the work of Charles Day Swan, who here places the requisite tower - a tent-roofed, octagonal-shaped one sided with fishscale shingles - along the east lateral wall rather than at the front corner. Equally unusual is the projecting bay attic window underneath the gable of the steeply pitched hip roof. Exquisite detailing is found on the front porch, topped with a shed roof supported by Doric columns, with spindle balustrades facing forward and a pediment with ornate foliate reliefs surrounding the house number. The head of an eponymous company whose business was the wholesale trade of grass seeds and dried fruits, Irving Kester (1826-1896) resided in the house for the last eleven years of his life. His widow Mercy (1827-1902) continued living there until her own death six years later.
