Description
English: WASHINGTON (July 21, 2009) Dr. Isabella Karle during her retirement from the Naval Research Laboratory after a combined 127 years (with Jerome Karle) of government service. The Distinguished Civilian Service Award is the highest Navy award that the SECNAV can confer on a civilian employee. The Karles both worked on the Manhattan Project that developed the first atomic weapon and Jerome Karle was a co-recipient of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. (U.S. Navy photo by John F.
