English: Names of islands in Swedish vary considerably based on whether the island is or has been inhabited (often: -holme), on how high above water level it is, on whether it has vegetation (and, if so, whether there are trees). This picture illustrates some of it, based on the parish of Nagu in Finland (with 1300 inhabitants). A scientific study Skärgårdsnamn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skärgårdsnamn) explores the naming in more detail. |
