Issoudun (Indre). Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch. Pot et vase à encens, en terre cuite, du Bas Moyen-Âge*. Provenance Abbaye Notre-Dame, Issoudun (Indre). Dans les sépultures du Moyen-Âge, on retrouve deux sortes de vases: ceux contenant de l'encens et ceux contenant de l'eau bénite. Ces vases servaient lors de la cérémonie des funérailles. Les "fioles à eau bénite" ont une contenance d'environ un demi litre, les vases à encens de quelques litres et sont percés de trous pour permettre la combustion de l'encens. Ces poteries destinées soit à rester dans la fosse soit à être jetées sont assez grossières. Deux liturgistes chrétiens, des XIIe et XIIIe siècles, Jean Beleth, évêque d'Amiens vers 1160 et Guillaume Durand, évêque de Mende vers 1280, nous expliquent que les vases retrouvés dans les sépultures médiévales, étaient destinés à contenir de l'eau bénite et à faire fumer de l'encens. Guillaume Durand l'exprime ainsi : "deinde (corpus) ponitur in spelunca in qua in quibusdam locis, ponitur aqua benedicta et prunae cum thure". Selon les liturgistes, l'eau bénite éloignait les démons, l'encens symbolisait les bonnes actions du défunt et le charbon de bois, outre sa fonction pratique pour brûler l'encens, signalait la fonction sacrée de la sépulture. Guillaume Durand l'exprime ainsi : "Aqua benedicta ne doemones qui multum eam timent ad corpus accedant ; solent namque desoevire in corpora mortuorum ut quod nequiverunt in vita saltem post mortem agant. Thus propter fetorem corporis removendum seu ut defunctus creatori suo acceptabilem bonorum operum odorem intelligatur obtulisse, seu ad ostendendum quod defunctis prosit auxilium orationis".
