| Description |
English: In a small park (now called Saraçhane Arkeoloji Parkı) excavations are going on. An earlier excavation by Dumbarton Oakes brought many fragments to light of the huge church that once stood here. Built between 524 and 527 it was larger than the Süleymaniye Mosque (at 52 x 58 meters, compared to the 52 meters square for the mosque without its atrium). Some remains are in the museum. But a large store of fragments lies within the fencing of the archaeological park. And the remains of the church’s structure, that were largely covered in 2015, are now out in the open. One can only wonder what will happen to all that. |
