  • Dansk: "Værket karakteriserer sig ved at skildre vulkanens rødglødende lava og tætte røgmasse fra en af åbningerne i jordskorpen (i venstre side) og samtidig lade Napolis kystlinje pittoresk indhylle i solopgangens klare, friske skær i højre side. Skildringen af det naturbårne og ukontrollerede udbrud indeholder derfor via denne tvedeling af billedrummet en slags sikkerhedsline bagud til det trygge kultiverede landskab. De to turister, der netop var ankommet, kunne således frit pendulere mellem det farlige og det velkendte, hvilket netop karakteriserede den pittoreske malestil" (Dansk Guldalder 2012: p. 111-112).
