Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Jacob Oppenheimer House, 138 Lexington Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2021. Dating to c. 1870, this is one of the oldest extant buildings in the Elmwood Village, an example of the Italianate style that's quite rare in an area so far removed from the city center, and a contributing property to the NRHP-listed Elmwood East Historic District. Standing two stories in height and sporting a front-gabled roof and a red brick exterior, the outstanding features on the Oppenheimer House are the ornate decorative brackets supporting the roof eaves, the contrasting window designs (round-arched on the second floor, segmental-arched on the ground floor), and - most interestingly of all - the hooded fanlight and sidelights framing the front entrance. It's the longtime home of Jacob Oppenheimer (1838-1911), an immigrant from the Netherlands who started out as a butcher, but by the time of his retirement was a prosperous cattle merchant doing business at the city stockyards. He lived in the house with his wife, Fredericka, and children until his death.
