| Description |
English: The Jacob Schmidt (or Smith) House at 71 Amherst Street is one of the oldest extant houses in Buffalo (dating to the first half of the 1830s) and a key contributing property to the NRHP-listed Market Square Historic District that makes up the center of what was once the independent Village of Black Rock, annexed by Buffalo in 1851. The house was actually built by Augustus Porter for the purpose of entertaining potential land buyers, passing into the Schmidt family's hands c. 1840. It was scheduled from demolition in 1989, but instead saved, purchased, and painstakingly restored to its original appearance by its present owner. |
