Baird Will Return To Coach Carleton. Athletic Director of Intercollegiate Champions to Return to Northfield. Special to The Globe. Northfield, Minnesota. March 8, 1904. A friend of J. Arthur Baird, who coached the Carleton football team last fall, received received a letter from Mr. Baird yesterday yesterday in which he states positively that he Will return to Carleton in September September to take charge of the football team again. After the season was over in 1903 Mr. Baird resigned his position, and the report that he is to return was hailed with delight by the Carleton people on account of the excellent record record he made with the champion team of last fall. Baird is now in a law office office in Chicago, but will leave his business business to return to Northfield during the football season. Carleton has excellent prospects for another winning team the coming season, season, as only three members of last year's team will be lost. Capt. Jim Hayes, the left tackle; Chancy, left guard, and Fullback Rose are the men who will complete the course, and Hendrickson. Hendrickson, the quarterback, will not play again on account of his leg being broken in the Hamline game on last November 14. All the others will return, and Captain Cundy has received word from several new men who will enter college in the fall. Walter Brubaker, who has played at quarterback on the Northfield high school team for the past three years, is planning on going to Carleton, and he will without doubt make good at Hendrickson's old position of quarterback. quarterback. He is the third Brubaker who has played quarter on the Northfield high or Carleton teams and is the most promising candidate for the position at Carleton next fall who has shown up as yet. He is a big fellow for the position, position, weighing over 170 pounds, and his weight will stand him In good stead when he tries for the Carleton team. Another man whom Cundy is banking banking on is Paul Ford, the Mazeppa boy, who played fullback on the team in 1901 and 1902. He has announced his intention of returning to Carleton next fall and will try for his old position, which Rose filled last fall. These two men, with Cundy, Norton, Johnson and Stensvad, will give Carleton Carleton a strong back field and the ends will be taken care of by Feer and Lee. In the line there will be Payne at right tackle, Swanson, right guard, and Ed Hayes, last year's center, leaving the positions of left guard and left tackle to be filled by new men. This is a nucleus for a very strong team, and as a whole, the outlook Is very good for the local college on the gridiron next fall. With Coach Baird sure of returning, the Carleton students are beginning this early to think of the football team which is to represent the institution in the intercollegiate struggles during the season of 1904.
