Jay Hughes, Old Pitcher, Is Found Dead on Coast. Sacramento, California, June 2, 1924. Belief that Jay Hughes, once nationally known baseball pitcher, whose body was found beneath a railroad trestle early today, had fallen from the bridge and had met death accidentally, was expressed by deputy sheriffs. Hughes' baseball career started in the '90's when he was a pitcher for the Gilt Edge team of Sacramento. He gained fame in 1897 when be defeated the Baltimore Orioles, shutting them out and allowing but three hits. He was signed immediately by Baltimore and later played with Brooklyn, Jay Hughes Jr., a son, is playing with the Evansville, Indiana, club of the Three-Eyes league.
