Summary[edit]
DescriptionJewett-Ward House, Buffalo, New York - 20200326.jpg |
English: The Jewett-Ward House, 676 Columbus Parkway (corner Connecticut Street), is "one of the most architecturally and historically significant buildings in the [Prospect Hill Historic D]istrict", according to the registration form successfully nominating the latter to the National Register of Historic Places. Dating to 1880, this imposing Stick-style residence is crowned by a tower with a steeply pitched roof containing jerkinhead dormers, the flared eaves of which are supported with brackets. The detailing in the wood on the cross gable to the right of the tower is also a notable characteristic of the style. Edgar B. Jewett (1843-1924) was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan but came to Buffalo as a young boy and eventually went to work for his father John, a manufacturer of refrigerators and other household appliances. After serving in the military and the New York National Guard during and after the Civil War, he went into politics and served a term as Mayor of Buffalo (1895-7). He remained with the Jewett Refrigerator Company until his death. Jewett moved to a larger house on Summer Street in 1891, at which time this home was being purchased by Colonel Francis G. Ward (1856-1915), a local politico who served as Superintendent of the Water Bureau (the pumping station at LaSalle Park bears his name today) and Public Works Commissioner, and was campaigning for a seat on the Common Council at the time of his death. |
