Медея и Аякс. Иоганн Георг Хильтеншпергер (1806—1890). Настенная панель, 1845—1848 гг. № LXIX. Санкт-Петербург, Государственный Эрмитаж, Галерея истории древней живописи, 69. LXIX. «Медею» и «Аяк­са» Тимо­ма­ха Хиль­тен­шпер­гер раз­ме­стил на одной кар­тине. По зако­нам антич­но­го искус­ства ни в живо­пи­си, ни в теат­ре сама сце­на убий­ства не пред­ста­ва­ла гла­зам зри­те­лей. Тимо­мах изо­бра­зил душев­ные муки обма­ну­той жен­щи­ны, дер­жа­щей меч и замыш­ля­ю­щей смерть играю­щих перед нею детей; один из них тянул­ся к ней за невидан­ною, бле­стя­щею игруш­кой (Луки­ан. О доме, 31). В древ­ней эпи­грам­ме подроб­но пере­да­ет­ся впе­чат­ле­ние от «Медеи» Тимо­ма­ха: Труд бес­ко­неч­ный при­нял Тимо­мах, чтобы выра­зить чув­ства, Столь непо­хо­жие в ней: то сост­ра­да­нье, то гнев; То и дру­гое ему уда­лось: посмот­ри на кар­ти­ну: Видишь, как в гне­ве сле­за, в жало­сти зло­ба скво­зит. Хва­тит с меня коле­ба­нья, — он муд­ро решил, — пусть Медеи,
