Title |
John Bull surrounded by the Swell Mob |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: John Bull, in old-fashioned dress with breeches and buckled shoes, is surrounded by five Tories all wearing top-hats. He is in back view with his left hand on a heavy cudgel, his right hand protecting his coat-pocket. He turns pugnaciously to Eldon (right), who is more battered and shrunken than the others and holds a handkerchief (his booty). Eldon: 'Come dont shove me because I'll take the Law of you'. The others are on J. B.'s left. Wellington, nervously apprehensive, is about to twitch a paper from J. B.'s pocket; Cumberland puts a hand on Wellington's shoulder, saying, 'Let us be off here's old Grey wig and Broom-stick coming'. Lyndhurst turns to look at him with a sly scowl. The fifth is (?) Carnarvon.

Notes |
(Description and comment from M. Dorothy George, 'Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires in the British Museum', XI, 1954) Apparently a satire on the "Days of May", see No. 17032, &c.; for the Swell Mob see No. 16669, &c. An unusually favourable rendering of a policeman, see No. 15768, &c. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
