Summary[edit]
DescriptionJohn J. Chelus House, Hamburg, New York - 20221108.jpg |
English: The John J. Chelus House, 4180 South Park Avenue, Hamburg, New York, November 2022. The Chelus House falls under the umbrella of the International Style, but the resemblance to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright (particularly that of the latter part of his career) is unmistakable: the muted earth-tone color scheme of the façade, the cantilevered roofs and balconies, and the placement of the entrance in an alcove well hidden from view all betray a clear influence. The exact date of the house's construction is uncertain, but it appears to have been around or shortly after 1950 (the U.S. Census of that year lists it as existent but vacant); its original owner, John J. Chelus (1913-1982), worked variously as a safety inspector for Bethlehem Steel and an apartment building superintendent (namely the Delaware Arms Apartments in North Buffalo). Chelus lived in the house until moving to Arizona a year before his death. |
