| Description |
The funeral of John Logan Campbell, known as the “Father of Auckland”, was held on 25 June 1912 He had settled at the mouth of Waitematā Harbour soon after he immigrated in 1840 and worked as a merchant, auctioneer and land speculator. His biggest land coup was his purchase of a 1000 acre farm, which he named One Tree Hill, in Auckland in 1853. In 1901, as Honorary Mayor, he hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York and gifted part of his farm to the nation. In their honour he named it Cornwall Park. Shown here is the notification of the closure of the Government Buildings in Auckland on the day of John Logan Campbell’s funeral.
