Summary[edit]

Description
English: The John Oley Manning House, 250 Richmond Avenue, Buffalo, New York, August 2020. A contributing property to the Elmwood West Historic District, the very unusual design of the Manning House violates one of the cardinal rules of the Queen Anne style of architecture: its façade sports almost perfect lateral symmetry, the only exception being the entrance which is tucked inconspicuously on the far right side of the full-width porch looking out onto Richmond Avenue, with its slender Doric columns. The requisite turret is indeed present, although - in another unusual twist - it's positioned in the center, utterly dominating the front elevation of the building and with bands of decorative woodwork in festoon and dentil patterns crowning each level. The house was built in 1889 for John Oley Manning (1862-1925), a maltster and barley importer with the firm of Manning & Sons (later renamed the Queen City Feed Company) who also served for a time with the city government as deputy treasurer. Manning lived in the house until 1896.
