Summary[edit]

Description
English: The John Roehrer House, 271 Roehrer Avenue, Buffalo, New York, May 2022. Though abandoned and in disrepair today, this two-and-a-half-story wood-framed residence was once a shining example of the workmanlike interpretation of Queen Anne architecture that dominated the city's built environment around the time of its construction (1891). The house was originally built at the corner of Roehrer and East Utica before being moved to the rear of the lot in 1920 to accommodate the construction of the commercial building now on that site, and the current façade was once the building's side elevation. But a look around the corner to the left gives a much more typical view, complete with enormous front gable. Note also the decorative scroll-sawn brackets straddling the projecting bay underneath the cross gable. John Roehrer (1855-1928) was a second-generation German-American who dabbled in the brewing, tanning, and hospitality industries before entering the field of real estate - in the late 1880s and early '90s, it was his Glenwood and Belt Street Land Companies who were responsible for the lion's share of the initial development of the Cold Spring area of Buffalo's East Side. The tracts he owned included the current site of his namesake street, Roehrer Avenue, as well as his own home where he lived until the death of his wife Louisa in 1925. Roehrer spent his last years at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in nearby Hamlin Park.
