Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Johnson-O'Connell House, 1470 Kensington Avenue, Buffalo New York, March 2023. Situated in the section of the city that was originally called Cleveland Hill and is now better known as Treehaven or Judges' Row, this handsome two-story home was built in 1932 and is pretty much the textbook definition of the Tudor Revival style that was all the rage in the realm of middle- and upper-class residential architecture in the era. All of the hallmarks of the style are well in evidence: an asymmetrical façade encompassing multiple overlapping gables; an understated entrance set off-center (with respect to the gable that crowns it if not the façade in general); an exterior composed of ultiple contrasting materials (the cinderblocks that undergird the structure are faced with a brown brick veneer on the ground floor and stucco above), and of course, ornamental half-timbering decorating the gable at upper right. Like many of its neighbors, Cleveland Hill Properties marketed 1470 Kensington to potential buyers as a stop on the annual "Home Beautiful Tours" that were put together by local newspapers (first the Courier-Express and later the Evening News) as a way of showcasing the best of the area's "showpieces of modern home building art". The home was eventually purchased by John W. Johnson (1906-1994), a building contractor who much later would be appinted head of the Buffalo Sewer Authority, but he only lived in the house for about four years; the tenure of its next owner, trucking company executive Harold W. O'Connell (1903-1972), was of a similar length.
