Summary

[edit]
Description

(looking upstream)

The boulder-sized sediments are fine-grained limestones derived from adjacent outcrops of the Maxville Limestone (Upper Mississippian). Sand-sized fluvial sediments along the shores of the creek are composed of quartz-lithic sand. Gravel bars along this creek have pebbles and cobbles of Maxville Limestone & siliciclastic sedimentary rocks derived from upstream outcrops of the Waverly Group (Lower Mississippian) & limestone, chert, and shale derived from upstream and uphill Pennsylvanian-aged outcrops. Scarce clasts of crystalline basement rocks from Canada are also present (derived from Ohio's Pleistocene glacial deposits).

Observed fauna in the creek include small water striders, whirligig beetles, Corbicula sp. Asian river clams (= introduced/pest species), a Lasmigona costa freshwater mussel ("fluted shell"), and trails made by Pleurocera semicarinata freshwater snails.

The creek's relatively calm water in the background is artificial - the remains of a very old impoundment is present. Historical records indicate that a mill was built here long ago.
