Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Joseph Griggs House, 231 Crescent Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. Though it's representative of the Shingle style of architecture that was coming to prominence at the time of its construction (sporting ponderous and bottom-heavy massing, an enormous side-gabled roof pierced by a low-profile dormer, and the namesake feature of shingles as siding), the Griggs House breaks two of the cardinal rules of the style: its façade is symmetrical, and its full-width front porch includes elements of Classical detailing, namely Ionic columns placed in trios at the side corners and flanking the top of the front steps. The twin turrets are another unusual feature. At the time of the house's construction in 1890, original owner Joseph Henry Griggs (1839-1920) was the soon-to-retire general manager of the New England Dressed Meat and Wool Company; he lived there until his death, and his daughter Jane stayed on for another three years after that.
