The location of the Capt. Joshua Slocum monument is in a small neighborhood park on Pilgrim Ave. adjacent to the harbor shared by Fairhaven and the former whaling port of New Bedford. Slocum acquired the Spray sometime after March of 1892 from a sea captain friend. After doing repairs on the Spray for some 13 months, Slocum launched the 36-foot, 9-inch sloop, but stayed in the Fairhaven area for several months more working along the waterfront before embarking on his historic voyage out of Boston on April 24, 1895. The round-the-world sailing adventure officially ended on June 27, 1898 in Newport, Rhode Island.
