Inscriptions: City mark on lower guard, right of center Inscriptions: Inscription in upper border cartouche, in center: POMPEIVS A / CESARE VICTVS / FVGIT Inscriptions: Woven signature in lower guard, right: G. V. LEEFDAEL Caesar wearing helmet with dragon crest stands in boat with Cleopatra (?) behind him under canopy (L, middle ground); another boat approaches, rowed by 2 naked men, man blows horn, Pompey holds spear stands up in boat, another standing man holds inscribed banner (center, foreground); boats on water (R, background) (L & R BRD) bowl of fruit, eagles, playing cherubim; (UPR BRD) garlands of flowers & fruit flank central cartouche with inscription; (LWR BRD) garlands of flowers & fruit flank central cartouche with landscape This panel is based on Justus van Egmont's design for the "Story of Cleopatra & Mark Antony" series. However, the inscription & the borders are to be found on several Brussels "Story of C. Julius Casesar" sets of this period. Therefore, the series title relates to the design of the central scene & the title/subject reflects the border inscriptions.
