Seoul, Korea July 15, 2015 To: Mr. KIM, Seong Geun Director General KNPA Foreign Affairs Bureau Dear Director General KIM, On July 10, 2015 the U.S. Embassy Seoul became aware of two threats posted to the U.S. Government website, Whitehouse.gov. In one post, the writer alleged he would orchestrate a re-attack against Ambassador Lippert and kill him. The second was a threat posted against President Obama’s family. The U.S. Embassy’s Regional Security Office, as a representative of the U.S. Government, is bringing these events to your attention and requesting a full investigation. If the writer ofthese threats is identified, and it is determined the threats meet the elements of a crime within the Korean Criminal Code, we ask that you hold the offender fully accountable under the laws as permitted by statute. The U.S. Government, and in particular the Regional Security Office, takes attempts at intimidation and inducing fear into U.S. Government envoys particularly seriously, especially in light ofthe recent attack on Ambassador Lippert. The Regional Security Office is responsible lor the safety and security not only for the U.S. Ambassador in Korea, but also the other Diplomatic personnel, their families, and employees working at the embassy. When a specific threat is made, it causes fear and results in a significant amount of additional work and coordination between both U.S. Security personnel, as well as host country protective elements to ensure lhe safety of the U.S. Envoy. We appreciate your consideration and assistance with this matter. Sincerely, Natasha M.
