                                                  ARTIST BIO

John’s life as an artist and craftsman is one of learning, building and creating. His work communicates life and experience, emotion and imagination in the tradition of Cape Ann artists.

Art classes in his teen years led to being selected to attend a Saturday art program for high school students at Mass Art. John went on to participate in correspondence classes in art while in the Navy. Following his discharge his work as a carpenter provided an opportunity to continue cultivating, exploring and refining his artist skills and temperament.

Early in his career, John worked in sign shops developing his design sense and carving skills. John’s work as a carpenter led him to varied creative career adventures that continue to inform his creative process. Opportunities included building wooden bridges, carving granite, executing decorative carving on rigged sailing ships, building a working water wheel, working as an officer aboard square rigged vessels, and building boats.

John continues his studies with contemporary artists including classes at the M.F.A. in Boston, instruction and workshops with David Curtis, Don Demers, Judy Ryan and Caleb Stone. Continuing in the tradition of the Plein Air artists of Cape Ann on the Northshore of Boston, John hones his skills while focusing on subject matter that captures the light in landscape, cityscape and seascape.

                                             ARTIST STATEMENT

John’s work as an artist is founded on his conviction that art is everywhere and for everyone. It is captured in the moment and is as much about composition and medium as it is about light and emotion. He believes the artistic experience and its completion happens in the eye of the viewer.

John’s experiences routinely provide him with exposure to the changing light and weather of New England’s four seasons. His observations nurture in him a passion to create art that allows others to experience the beauty and power of a moment’s light.
