| Description |
A U.S. Navy North American RA-5C Vigilante (BuNo 149278) from Reconnaissance Heavy Attack Squadron 13 (RVAH-13) Bats refuels from a Douglas KA-3B Skywarrior (BuNo 142653) from Heavy Attack Squadron 4 (VAH-4) Fourrunners. Both aircraft were assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) for a deployment to Vietnam from 19 October 1965 to 13 June 1966. The KA-3B 142653 was shot down on 12 April 1966 by Chinese Mikoyan-Gurevitch MiG-19 fighter over Luichow Peninsula in Kuangtung Province, Hainan Island, China, after having strayed into Chinese airspace (approximately 21º8’N, 111º17’E). The crew was killed. The RA-5C 149278 was later shot down by flak over Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam, on 5 May 1968, while in service with RVAH-1, CVW-9, aboard USS Enterprise (CVAN-65). Both crew ejected and became prisoners of war. |
