Line-up of Lions in the inner periphery of the temple

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The most striking and unusual feature of this temple is 58 small shrines, each with Pillars of Yaazhi and Lion line the inner periphery of the temple.

Each shrine is filled with stunning depictions of Shiva and it would not be an exaggeration that this temple may be called as one of the best and beautiful repositories of Shiva iconography. Various events (Shiva killing Asuras), 'Tandava' (Divine Dance poses) of Shiva, Tripurantaka, KiratArjun War, Narasimha, Parvathi and many are sculpted in each shrine. PLACE & PERIOD : Kailasanathar Temple (Kailasanathar means “Lord of Cosmic Mountain”) must be the first standalone structural stone temple in this region.

This trend setter temple dedicated to Shiva was built in 685-705CE by Pallava King Narsimhavarman II alias Rajasimha Pallava,
