English: The Kalij Pheasant, also known simply as kalij, is a species of pheasant commonly found in forests and thickets, particularly in the Himalayan foothills spanning from Nepal and Pakistan to western Thailand. This distinctive bird features bare red facial skin, a backward-pointing crest, and a vertically compressed tail. The males boast an iridescent black and silver plumage, while females exhibit a grayish-brown coloration. Notably, the bird's coloration varies significantly across its range, with northeastern individuals typically being the darkest.

The Kalij Pheasant primarily inhabits forested areas, typically in hilly or mountainous regions. In the northern part of its range, it shares territory with the Silver Pheasant, leading to the formation of confusing intergrades between the two species. Originally native to South and Southeast Asia, the Kalij Pheasant has been introduced to the Hawaiian Islands of Hawaii and western Oahu.

Male Kalij Pheasants emit a soft crow, and their repertoire of calls includes low grunts and high-pitched squeals. This avian species adds a touch of uniqueness to its habitats through its distinctive features and vocalizations.
