Paintings from South India

The sensitive and tender depiction of the calf sucking from its mother, the wish-fulfilling sacred cow Kamadhenu, provides a glimpse of how she would have looked before the damage to her pigment. Her entire body would have been covered with images of sages and deities, including scenes from the life of Krishna. Kamadhenu emerged as one of the treasures from the churning of the Ocean of Milk. (She is visible in the sky to the right of the mountain in The Churning of the Ocean of Milk, at right.) A lavishly adorned royal sage, probably Vishvamitra, is seated under a tree on a low throne at the right, and he venerates her with offerings of flowers.
