Description
English: Kandy Esala Perahera in Kandy Sri Lanka. I took this picture in July 1987 while I was in Kandy. It shows Raja the Elephant descending the stairs from the Tooth Temple carrying a casket containing the tooth of Buddha on his back. Raja was over 80 years old and died shortly after this photo was taken. This was Raja's last Perahera. Since then a younger elephant has carried the tooth of Buddha during the annual tooth festival.
