Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Patrol Instrument at the Kanzelhöhe Solar Observatory in Carinthia, Austria. Every clear day, the sun is observed with this instrument from sunrise to sunset. Live images of the sun can be seen at the web site of the observatory.

The instrument consists of five refracting telescopes on a common mount.

Three of the intruments are built into one, rectangular tube: First, there is a 110mm/1650 mm refractor which is used to project the image of the sun on a sceen (seen in the image at left) where a daily sunspot drawing is made. Second is a 100mm/2000mm refracor with a Hα filter. Using a beam splitter, the telescope feeds two CCD cameras for continuous observations of the sun in the red emission line of Hydrogen, as well as one eyepiece for visual observations. (The eyepiece and one of the cameras is visible near the lower right corner of the image.) Third is 110mm/1650mm refractor for continuous observations in the blue Ca II K emission line, using another CCD detector.

On top oft the rectangular tube is a 130mm/1460mm refractor for continuous CCD observations of the solar photosphere in green light. Finally, there is a smaller guide scope on top of all these insruments.
