Summary[edit]

Description

The Engine House was built in 1928 by Henry Stilgoe, chief engineer to the Metropolitan Water Board.

Following the Metropolis Water Act of 1852 (which outlawed the extraction of drinking water from the tidal Thames and made filtration compulsory), a huge array of filter beds and pumping stations sprang up along the freshwater Thames above Hampton Court.

Each water company had their own plot--Kempton Park was developed by the New River Company, originally established by a group of seventeenth-century entrepreneurs and now chiefly remembered for the stretches of ornamental duck-pond they constructed in Enfield, Hornsey, Harringay, Finsbury Park, Islington and Hackney.

Before they completed the Engine House, they were subject to compulsory purchase by the new Metropolitan Water Board.
