Summary[edit]
DescriptionKeszthely-Fenékpuszta (Castellum) - Germanic gold buckle, Hungary.jpg |
English: Golden buckle from the Ödenkirche plot grave field at Keszthely-Fenékpuszta
Germanic frame and prong buckle of cast gold. Two animal heads with open mouths are depicted on the oval frame, two bird heads at the beginning of the prong, and an additional bird head with beak on the lowest prong end. On the underside is the Greek inscription ANTIKOY punched as individual points with a burin. This frame-and-prong buckle was found in Grave A of the Ödenkirche plot grave field at Keszthely-Fenékpuszta. In the 130 graves at this site, typically Germanic objects were found in addition to the characteristic objects of early Keszthely culture (6th-7th centuries). Grave A is a large, east-west oriented wooden grave chamber of a robust adult male measuring 1.88 meters (= 6' 2") tall. The grave was robbed shortly after the wooden structure collapsed, but a few important objects including this gold buckle survived.
