English: Kodaikanal Lake during sunset. Kodaikanal Lake is a manmade lake built by the colonial government during the British Raj. It was part of the efforts to beautify various hill stations across the Indian subcontinent by the British colonial government to create infrastructure for its British and Irish officers to rest up during summers and sick days. Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the then Collector of Madurai, was instrumental in creating the lake in 1863, amidst the Kodaikanal town which was developed by the British and early missionaries from the USA.
