DescriptionKrestovsky Stadium, 2018 FIFA World Cup.jpg |
English: Photograph by Cyril Venediktov of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group E match between the Brazil national football team and Costa Rica national football team at Krestovsky Stadium. At a final cost of over $1.1 billion in 2017 U.S. dollars, it is one of the most expensive stadiums ever built in the world, owing mostly to its troubled construction. Numerous delays since its ground-breaking ceremony in 2007 pushed the venue's opening from its intended 2008 date to 2017. While built to be the home ground of FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, it became the centerpiece of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup and a major venue for the World Cup after Russia won hosting rights for both tournaments in 2010, during the stadium's construction. It hosted four group stage matches and three knockout stage matches, including the third place playoff between the Belgium national football team and England national football team. |
