Description
Català: L'últim dia de Sagunt - Francesc Domingo Marqués, 1869. Oli sobre tela. Diputació de València.

"El setge de la ciutat edetana d'Arse (Sagunt) per part dels cartaginesos, dins de les seves ambicions expansionistes, va ser el detonant de la Segona Guerra Púnica. L'atac es va estendre al llarg de nou mesos. El quadre reflecteix el dramatisme de la resistència i l'heroisme dels indígenes, que van esperar inútilment el socors dels aliats romans. El quadre va ser pintat a Roma i lliurat a l'Acadèmia de Sant Carles de València com a prova d'aprofitament d'una beca d'estudis concedida a l'artista per la diputació provincial. El tema triat és un dels preferits de la pintura historicista espanyola del segle XIX."
